Planning Theme Park Magic for Every Walk of Life

Jeff Galloway Dies, RunDisney fans Mourn

It is with a heavy heart that the runDisney community says goodbye to its most patient, encouraging, and visionary coach. Jeff Galloway—U.S. Olympian, author, and the father of the “Run-Walk-Run” method—passed away on February 25, 2026, at the age of 80 following a stroke.

For those of us who have spent predawn hours huddled in the corrals of EPCOT or the Magic Kingdom, Jeff was more than a training consultant. He was the voice in our earbuds that told us we belonged there.

A note from the editor: I had the absolute pleasure of briefly speaking with Mr. Galloway at a RunDisney Expo, and it was such an absolute pleasure. He was sweet, encouraging, and helped me feel less intimidated, as it was my first 10k, and my first RunDisney race.
I am here with you, fellow run-walk-runners.

A Legacy of Inclusion

Jeff didn’t just teach us how to run; he taught us how to finish with a smile.
In a sport often defined by “no pain, no gain,” Jeff championed the idea that walking wasn’t a sign of weakness, it was a strategic tool for endurance.

The Man Behind the Method (Jeff Galloway)

The Olympian: Long before the “Disney Magic,” Jeff was an elite competitor, representing the United States in the 10,000 meters at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
The Teacher: He realized that the joy of running shouldn’t be reserved for the elite. His Galloway Method lowered the barrier for millions of people who thought they weren’t “runners.” Including several of our contributors, and our editor.
The Disney Voice: As THE official training consultant for runDisney, his training plans helped countless first-timers complete 5Ks, Half Marathons, and the grueling Dopey Challenge.

The “Magic Mile” is for everyone

(For those not in the know, a “Magic Mile” is actually part of Galloway’s pacing measurement.)
For runDisney fans, Jeff was a fixture at the race expos, always ready with a gentle smile, a signed book, and the absolute certainty that you could do it. He didn’t care about your pace; he cared about your heart.
He saw the “Magic Mile” in every grandmother, every survivor, and every nervous beginner who pinned on a bib for the first time.

Jeff Galloway Final Miles

Jeff’s passing comes just as the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend kicks off—a timing that feels poignantly fitting. Thousands of runners will take to the roads of Walt Disney World this week, many of them using the very intervals Jeff spent his life perfecting.

Though he won’t be there to wave at the start line this time, his legacy will be heard in the rhythmic beep of thousands of interval timers and seen in the triumphant tears of every runner who crosses that finish line.

May the Jeff be with you:

The 2026 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend at Walt Disney World takes place February 26–March 2, 2026, featuring 5K, 10K, half marathon, and challenge events. Rest in Peace, Jeff.
We’ll take it from here—one run, one walk, and one mile at a time.
Thank you for showing us that the magic isn’t just in the destination, but in every single step we take to get there.

To honor Jeff’s legacy, there is no better way than to lace up and follow the road he paved for us. Below is a simplified 10K training plan based on his world-renowned Run-Walk-Run method, specifically designed to get you across the finish line feeling strong:

Choosing Your Magic Intervals

Jeff always taught that the secret to the method is taking walk breaks before you get tired. Find your goal pace below to find your starting ratio:

10:00 – 12:15 min/mi: Run 60 seconds / Walk 30 seconds

12:15 – 14:15 min/mi: Run 30 seconds / Walk 30 seconds

14:30 – 15:45 min/mi: Run 15 seconds / Walk 30 seconds

17:00 – 18:30 min/mi: Run 8 seconds / Walk 30 seconds

Coach Jeff Pro-Tip: “The ‘huff and puff’ rule: if you are huffing and puffing at the end of a run segment, your run is too long or too fast. Shorten the run, lengthen the walk, and find your joy again.”

Keep the Magic Moving

Jeff’s work continues to inspire millions through his official resources, books, and retreats. Whether you are a “Couch to 5K” beginner or a seasoned marathoner, his official site is the gold standard for injury-free training.

To keep your spirits high during those 6.2 miles, here are ten of Jeff Galloway’s most iconic and heart-centered mantras.

Carry these with you to honor the man who believed that every finisher is a champion.

The Galloway 10K Race Day Mantras

“Run-Walk-Run: It’s not a compromise, it’s a strategy.” * Use this: When you feel the urge to skip a walk break because you “feel fine.” Remember, the break is what keeps you feeling fine until the end.

“The magic is in the movement.”

  • Use this: During Mile 4 when the fatigue starts to set in. Focus on the simple joy of being able to move your body.

“Huffing and puffing is a choice, not a requirement.”

  • Use this: To remind yourself to slow down or lengthen your walk break. If you can’t talk, you’re going too fast for a Galloway finish.

“Finish with a smile.”

  • Use this: As your primary goal. Jeff always said a race isn’t successful unless you feel good enough to enjoy the victory.

“Take the walk break before you need it.”

  • Use this: At the very first mile marker. Trust the method; it’s backed by decades of Jeff’s research.

“You are an athlete.”

  • Use this: If you start to feel “imposter syndrome” among the faster runners. Jeff believed anyone with the courage to start is a true athlete.

“One minute at a time.”

  • Use this: When the 10K distance feels overwhelming. Just focus on the next 60 seconds of your interval.

“There is no ‘cheating’ in a walk break.”

  • Use this: To silience the “inner critic” that says you should be running the whole way. Jeff proved that walk breaks actually make you faster over long distances.

“The person who finishes last gets the same medal as the person who finishes first.”

  • Use this: To take the pressure off your time. In the runDisney world, the bling is just as shiny at the back of the pack.

“Every mile is a gift.”

  • Use this: As you approach the finish line. Reflect on the training, the health, and the community that brought you here today.

Honoring Jeff at the Finish Line

Many runDisney fans are choosing to wear a yellow ribbon or a small “JG” on their bibs this weekend to honor his memory.

The runDisney 10K “Ready to Fly” Checklist

The Night Before (The “Flat Runner” Layout)

  • Race Bib: Attached to your shirt with safety pins or a bib belt. (Don’t forget the safety pins!)
  • The Costume/Outfit: Ensure your Disney-themed gear is moisture-wicking. Avoid heavy cotton! TEST DRIVE your FIT before race weekend. Ideally during a long run.
  • Disney-Themed Socks: High-quality, moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters.
  • Interval Timer/Watch: Fully charged and programmed with your Jeff Galloway ratios (e.g., 30/30).
  • Shoes: The pair you’ve been training in. Never wear brand-new shoes on race day!

The “Essentials” Bag

  • Anti-Chafe Stick: Apply generously to any area where skin meets skin or fabric.
  • Blister Bandaids: Just in case!
  • Fuel & Hydration: Your preferred gels, chews, or salt tabs.
  • Phone & Headphones: Fully charged for your “Disney Race” playlist.
  • MagicBand/ID: For park entry and identification.

The “Post-Race” Bag (Checked at Gear Bag Drop)

  • Dry Clothes: A fresh shirt and a light jacket (Florida mornings can be chilly!).
  • Flip Flops: Your feet will thank you for getting out of those sneakers.
  • Recovery Snack: While Disney provides a snack box, you might want your favorite protein bar.
  • Portable Charger: To juice up your phone for all those post-race medal selfies!

Pro-Tip for Your Big Healthy Heart:

Remember that the runDisney 10K usually starts well before the sun comes up. Bring a “throwaway” sweatshirt from a thrift store to keep you warm in the corrals; you can discard it at the start line, and Disney collects and donates them to local charities!

The “Galloway Goal” 10K Race Morning Timeline

Based on a standard 5:00 AM runDisney start time.

  • 2:30 AM – Wake Up: The hardest part of the race! Drink 8–12 oz of water and eat a light, familiar breakfast (bagel, banana, or peanut butter).
  • 3:15 AM – Leave the Room: Whether you are taking a Disney bus, a rideshare, or driving, you want to be moving now. I encourage taking the Disney bus, including if you’re a spectator!
  • 3:45 AM – Arrive at the Epcot Parking Lot: This gives you time for security, one last “real” restroom break, and to soak in the DJ and pre-race vibes.
  • 4:15 AM – Head to the Corrals: It’s a bit of a trek to get to the start line at Epcot. Use this walk as your Galloway “pre-walk” to warm up your muscles.
  • 4:45 AM – National Anthem & Final Prep: Check your shoe laces, turn on your interval timer, and find your space in the corral.
  • 5:00 AM – Fireworks & Flourish: The first wave goes off! Remember Jeff’s advice: Start slower than you think you need to.

One Final Thought…

As you stand in that corral in the dark, surrounded by thousands of other “Dreamers,” take a deep breath. You’ve done the work, you have the strategy, and you have the heart of an Olympian behind you.
